单词 ladys laces
释义

lady's lacesn.

Brit. /ˌleɪdɪz ˈleɪsᵻz/, U.S. /ˌleɪdiz ˈleɪsᵻz/
Forms:

α. 1500s–1700s ladies laces, 1700s– lady's laces, 1900s– ladies' laces.

β. 1600s ladie laces, 1600s–1700s lady laces.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lady n., lace n.
Etymology: < the genitive of lady n. + the plural of lace n., although the first element is sometimes apprehended as plural; so called from the resemblance of the variegated blades to silk laces (compare quot. 1597). In β. forms < lady n. + the plural of lace n., perhaps originally reflecting a genitive compound with unmarked first element (see discussion at lady n.).
Now historical and rare.
Any of various variegated grasses; esp. a striped variety of reed canary grass, Phalaris arundinacea, grown as an ornamental. Occasionally also in singular.
