Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lady n., finger n.
Etymology: In α. forms < lady n. + finger n., perhaps originally reflecting a genitive compound with unmarked first element (see discussion at lady n.), so called from the resemblance in shape of the various objects to fingers. In β. forms < the genitive of lady n. + finger n., although the first element is sometimes apprehended as plural.
1. Any of several herbaceous plants with flowers borne in clusters resembling fingers; esp. kidney vetch ( Anthyllis vulneraria) and, formerly, †bird's-foot trefoil ( Lotus corniculatus) (also lady-finger grass). Also in plural with singular agreement.
