Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < the plural of lady n., so called on account of the inscription on the door of the facility, and partly (in β. forms) shortened < ladies' room n. at lady n. Compounds 3b. Compare men's n. and gents (see gents n.).
Usually preceded by the. A public toilet or washroom for women. Cf. men's n.
