Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French lacis.
Etymology: < French lacis network of blood vessels or nerves (1690), type of lace created by embroidering patterns on a ground of square-meshed netting (1865 or earlier), specific sense developments of lacis mesh (c1160 in Old French) < lacer lace v. + -is , suffix forming nouns (see palis n.).In sense 2 after French lacis (C. Oberling & P. Y. Hatt 1960, in Ann. d'anat. pathol. 5 448).
1. Embroidery. A lace created by embroidering patterns on a ground of square-meshed netting. Cf. filet n. 1, punto a maglia n. at punto n.4 1.

2003 Art Inst. Chicago Museum Stud. 29 22 This border was made in a needlework technique known as lacis, utilizing a ground of square netting that was subsequently embroidered with cloth stitches.
2. Histology. A network of palely staining cells with branching processes, located in the mesangial part of the juxtaglomerular apparatus. Frequently attributive. Now rare.lacis cell: see Compounds.
