Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian laciniato.
Etymology: < Italian laciniato (1973 or earlier designating a variety of kale, in cavolo laciniato ; also (rare) lacinato), probably a specific use of laciniato laciniate adj., perhaps ultimately arising < scientific Latin laciniatus laciniate adj., as an epithet originally applied to forms of kale with laciniate (jagged) leaves.

More fully lacinato kale. A variety of kale having long, narrow, dark green leaves with a puckered surface; = cavolo nero n. Also called black cabbage, black kale.
