Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French lacrimable; Latin lacrimābilis.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Middle French lacrimable lamentable, pitiful (c1300 in Old French), tearful, accompanied by tears (15th cent. or earlier), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin lacrimābilis deserving tears, pitiful, tearful, weeping < lacrimāre lachrymate v. + -bilis -ble suffix. Compare Spanish lacrimable (late 14th cent.).With the formal variation compare discussion at lachryma n.
Obsolete.
1. Characterized by weeping or mourning; tearful, lachrymose. Also: mawkish, sentimental.
