Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lace v., piece n.
Etymology: Apparently < lace v. + piece n. Compare earlier lacing n. 3a, and perhaps also lace n. 3.
Shipbuilding. Now historical.
A piece of timber attached to the head of a ship in order to support the figurehead.The lace piece is a feature of changes in sailing ship design in the early 19th cent., which meant that the figurehead could no longer be attached directly to the knee of the head as it had been formerly.
