Signed in 1965, the agreement abolished tariffs on the sale of vehicles and automotive parts between the two countries, with the provision that to import cars duty-free into Canada, U.S. manufacturers had to use a minimum proportion of Canadian components and build in Canada a number of vehicles proportionate to their Canadian sales.
