Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: labyrinth n., -odont comb. form.
Etymology: < labyrinth n. + -odont comb. form. Compare French labyrinthodonte (1842 or earlier).In the specific sense after either scientific Latin Labyrinthodon, former genus name (see labyrinthodon n.) or Labyrinthodontia, group name (R. Owen, 1860).
Palaeontology.
A. adj.
Having or characterized by teeth with labyrinthine infolding of the dentine and enamel; spec. relating to or designating large fossil amphibians of the group Labyrinthodontia, which includes forms that were transitional between the lobe-finned fishes and all subsequent tetrapods.The Labyrinthodontia have traditionally been treated as a taxonomic subclass, but now that the constituent taxa are known to be paraphyletic it is regarded more as an evolutionary grade.
