Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin lābrusca.
Etymology: < classical Latin lābrusca (noun) wild vine, (adjective) designating a wild vine, of unknown origin. Adopted in scientific Latin as a specific epithet in Vitis labrusca ( Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) 203).
1. A vine regarded as a wild form of the cultivated grapevine, Vitis vinifera; a fruit of this. Occasionally also: any of several other climbing plants, esp. black bryony ( Dioscorea communis), which has small, round, red fruits. Obsolete.

2. A species of grapevine native to eastern North America, Vitis labrusca; (also) any of numerous cultivated varieties or hybrids of this. Also: the fruit of such a vine, used as a table grape and for preserving and winemaking, and often described as having a musky or foxy odour and flavour; wine made from such grapes. Also called fox grape. Frequently attributive (see Compounds).
