Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin labrōsus ; Latin labrum , -ose suffix1.
Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin labrōsus forming a rim or lip, in post-classical Latin also having large lips (in undated glossaries; from 12th cent. in British glossarial sources) < labrum lip (see labrum n.1) + -ōsus -ose suffix1. In sense 2 independently < its elements classical Latin labrum lip + -ose suffix1. Compare earlier labrous adj.
