Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek λάβραξ.
Etymology: < ancient Greek λάβραξ kind of sea fish, bass < λάβρος turbulent (of uncertain origin) + -αξ, suffix forming nouns. In the specific sense denoting the former genus after scientific Latin Labrax, former genus name ( Cuvier Le règne animal VI. (1828) 19); compare post-classical Latin labrax (5th cent.).
Now chiefly historical.
In classical literature: a predatory marine fish, usually considered to be the European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. Formerly also (in form Labrax): †a genus comprising the sea basses and temperate basses now placed in the genera Dicentrarchus, Morone, and Lateolabrax; a fish of this genus (obsolete).
