单词 lamprey
释义

lampreyn.

Brit. /ˈlampri/, U.S. /ˈlæmpri/
Forms: Middle English, 1500s–1600s lamprei(e, lampreye, Middle English–1600s lampray(e, laumpray, laumpree, laumprey, Middle English laumperey, lawmpery, Middle English–1600s lampre, 1500s–1600s lampry, lamprie, Middle English– lamprey.
Etymology: < Old French *lampreie (Old French and modern French lamproie ) = Provençal lampreza , lamprea , lamprada , Italian lampreda (the Spanish lamprea , Portuguese lampreia seem to be from French) < medieval Latin lamprēda (glossed muræna c 1050 in Wright-Wülcker 180/28); the word was adopted into the Germanic languages: Old English lamprede (also lęmpedu limpet n.), Old High German lampreta (modern German lamprete, whence Swedish, Danish lampret), Middle Dutch lampreide. The ulterior etymology is uncertain. The medieval Latin lamprēda is usually believed to be an alteration of the synonymous lampetra (recorded earlier, viz. in the Glossary of Philoxenus, ? 4–5th cent.), which is explained as < Latin lambĕre to lick + petra stone, in allusion to the fact that the lamprey attaches itself by a sucker to stones. The use of medieval Latin lamprēda for the limpet n. as well as the lamprey gives some plausibility to this; but possibly lampetra may be merely an etymologizing perversion.
A fish of the genus Petromyzon, resembling an eel in shape and in having no scales. It has a mouth like a sucker, pouch-like gills, seven spiracles or apertures on each side of the head, and a fistula or opening on the top of the head.
