Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) an error for intended *authoritate (perhaps < authorit- (in authority n.) + -ate suffix3; compare post-classical Latin auctoritare (13th cent. or earlier)), or perhaps (ii) irregularly < authorit- (in authority n.) + classical Latin dat-, past participial stem of dare to give (see datum n.).
Obsolete. rare.
