Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish kapl.

Etymology: < Yiddish kapl, kapel skullcap < German (now regional) Kappel small cap, variant (without i-mutation of the stem vowel) of Käppel small cap (17th cent. or earlier) < Kappe cap, hat (see cap n.¹) + -el , suffix forming diminutives (see -le suffix). Compare the now more usual synonyms kippah n. and yarmulke n.Both forms with -a- and forms with -u- ultimately represent /ʌ/ as an approximation to Yiddish /a/. British English forms with -o- may be influenced by Yiddish kop head ( < Middle High German kopf : see cop n.²). An etymological connection with Yiddish kuppel ‘cupola, dome’ is unlikely on both formal and semantic grounds. Yiddish kuppel is ultimately < Italian cupola cupola n., probably via German Kuppel (17th cent.); compare also Russian kupol (first half of the 18th cent.).

In Jewish usage: a skullcap worn by Jewish men during prayer and other religious services and rituals, and by strictly Orthodox Jewish men at all times; a yarmulke, a kippah.The word is now rare compared with yarmulke and kippah and is predominantly used in British Jewish communities and by some Orthodox Jews elsewhere.
