Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: knob n., English kerrie , kierie n.; Dutch knopkieri.
Etymology: Partly < knob n. + kerrie, variant of kierie n., after South African Dutch knopkieri (see below), and partly (especially in early use in the form knopkierie) directly < South African Dutch knopkieri (1804 as knopkirie, or earlier; Afrikaans knopkieri).
A short, heavy stick with a large rounded knob at one end, traditionally used as a club or missile (and also as a walking stick) by the indigenous peoples of southern and eastern Africa; (sometimes more generally) any club or cosh of similar design.
