Inflections: Plural kwachas, unchanged.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Bemba. Partly a borrowing from Chewa. Etymons: Bemba kwacha, Chewa kwacha.
Etymology: < (i) Bemba kwacha, and (ii) its cognate Chewa kwacha, literally ‘it has dawned’ < kw-, locative prefix, also with the sense ‘there is’ + -a-, element marking near past or perfective tense and aspect + -cha to dawn. The phrase was used as a slogan with allusion to the nationalist concept of a new dawn of freedom; the currency was named with reference to this concept.The plural form kwachas is an English development; in Chewa, the plural form denoting the monetary unit is makwacha.
