Etymology: < labial adj. + -ize suffix.Compare French labialiser (1776 in uncertain intransitive sense, perhaps ‘to use the lips in producing sounds’; 1859 in the specific use in phonetics, perhaps after English), German labialisieren (1857 in labialisirt labialized adj.).
Phonetics.
transitive. To articulate (a speech sound, now esp. a consonant) with rounding or complete or partial closure of the lips as a secondary articulatory feature; to make labial or add labial articulation to. Also intransitive. See labial adj. 1.
