Etymology: < scientific Latin labellum (early 17th cent. or earlier in post-classical Latin in botany, a1826 in entomology), specific uses of classical Latin labellum lip < labrum labrum n.1 + -ellum -ellum suffix. Compare earlier label n.2In plural form labella after the Latin plural form.
1. Botany. Originally: the lower lip, or a distinctive lower petal, of the corolla of any of various flowers. In later use: spec. the middle, often lowest petal of an orchid flower, typically larger and of a different shape from the other two petals. Cf. label n.2, labium n. 3.
