Etymology: Partial translation of Japanese kobeishi (J. Takubo et al. 1950, in Jrnl. Geol. Soc. Japan LVI. 512), < Kobe , name of a locality in Kyoto prefecture, Japan + ishi mineral (formative suffix of names of minerals): see -ite suffix1.
Mineralogy.
A black, prismatic, hydrated multiple oxide of formula close to AB2(O,OH)6 (where A represents mainly yttrium, iron, and uranium and B represents mainly titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, and tantalum), but with much less (Nb,Ta)2O5 than minerals of the euxenite-polycrase series and more TiO2.

1950 J. Takubo et al. in Jrnl. Geol. Soc. Japan LVI. 513 [Eng. abstr. of article in Jap.] The content of TiO2 is..exceedingly high compared with that of polycrase or blomstrandite. So the writers propose here to call this mineral ‘Kobeite’ after the name of the locality.

1961 Mineral. Jrnl. 3 146 The writers are inclined to recognize kobeite as a distinct mineral species belonging to multiple oxides rich in titanium, zirconium and yttrium group rare earths.
