Etymology: < kirk n. + land n.1 Compare earlier church land n.Attested earlier in place names, as Kyrkeland , Blencarn, Cumberland (c1140; now Kirkland), Kirkeland , Blennerhasset, Cumberland (1246; 1163 as Chirchelanda ; now Kirkland), etc., and in surnames derived from them, as Michael de Kerkeland' (1196; Cumberland), Johannes de Kyrkeland (a1309; Roxburghshire), etc., although it is unclear whether these examples reflect early Scandinavian or English formations, as both elements of the compound could be either Scandinavian or English (compare discussion at kirk n.).
