Origin: A borrowing from Unami Delaware. Etymon: Unami Delaware kələk:əní:k:an.
Etymology: < Unami Delaware kələk:əní:k:an smoking mixture (of tobacco and sumac leaves), sumac, lit. ‘mixture’, ultimately < the Algonquian base of Ojibwa ginig- mixed. The β. forms show assimilation of the first syllable to the second within English. The form killinick (in a historical novel) probably reflects a misreading of an earlier form.
