In sense 2 directly < Irish abthaine and Scottish Gaelic abthaine (also in Latin contexts as abthan , abthain , abthen , abthein , abbathain , abbethayn ; Early Irish apthaine position of abbot, abbacy; < abb abbot (genitive singular abbad , abbath , < post-classical Latin abbat- , abbas : see abbot n.) + -aine, suffix forming abstract nouns).The quots. at sense 1 all directly or indirectly refer to the passage from John of Fordun, which relates the marriage of Bethóc (Beatrix), daughter of Malcolm II, to Crínán, Abbot of Dunkeld, in the late 10th or early 11th cent. Crínán's title was apparently confused with the name of the monastic lands at Dull in Perthshire, which appears in Latin charters from the 13th cent. as Abthania de Dul (and variants; compare the modern place name Appin of Dull and also 1880 at sense 2); these lands had by then become part of the diocese of Dunkeld (established in the 12th cent.).
