单词 kumbaya
释义

kumbayan.adj.

Brit. /ˌkʊmbɑːˈjɑː/, U.S. /ˌkʊmˌbɑˈjɑ/
Forms: 1900s– kum ba ya, 1900s– kumbaya, 1900s– kum ba yah, 1900s– kumbayah.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: English Kum ba ya, Come by here.
Etymology: < Kum ba ya, the title of an African American spiritual song (the earliest verified recording of which was made in 1926 by Robert Winslow Gordon from a performance by H. Wylie), in which Kum ba ya represents a pronunciation of Come by here ( < come v. + by prep. + here adv.).The song experienced a resurgence in popularity during the folk music revival of the 1960s, especially as a result of Joan Baez's 1962 recording, and was commonly used as a protest song by the civil rights movement of the time. It is as a result of this that kumbaya became associated with calls for or expressions of unity.
Originally U.S. (chiefly depreciative).
