Etymology: < German Krone any of various gold or silver coins used in central Europe (1401 or earlier), gold coin of the German Empire (1871), monetary unit of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and of some of its successor states (1892, compare koruna n. and korona n.); specific uses of Krone crown, after Middle French, French couronne (see discussion at crown n.). Compare Middle Dutch croon (Dutch kroon ), Middle Low German krōne any of various coins, both initially with reference to French coins. Compare crown n. 32.The plural form reflects the German plural form Kronen . The β. forms reflect a misinterpretation of the German plural form as a singular.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Danish. Partly a borrowing from Norwegian. Etymons: Danish krone; Norwegian krone.
Etymology: < (i) Danish krone monetary unit of Denmark and Norway (initially of the Scandinavian Monetary Union (1873); earlier with reference to an early modern Danish coin (17th cent.); specific use of krone crown n.), and its cognate (ii) Norwegian krone (1875 in this sense). In use with reference to Sweden (the third member of the Scandinavian Monetary Union; compare sense 2) after Swedish krona krona n.1 Compare crown n. 32. Compare also ore n.9The plural form kroner reflects the Danish plural form kroner and its Norwegian equivalent.
