Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: king n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < king n. + -ite suffix1.With use with reference to New Zealand compare Maori kīngitanga reign (1830), Maori kingship, also the movement in support of it (1860) < kīngi king ( < English king n.) + -tanga suffix forming abstract nouns (compare Maoritanga n.). Compare King party n., King Movement n. at king n. Compounds 4a.

A supporter of a king. In later use spec. (New Zealand) a follower or supporter of the Maori King during the New Zealand Wars of 1845–72; a member or supporter of the King Movement (see King Movement n. at king n. Compounds 4a). Cf. Queenite n.
