a. A small Eurasian bird, Alcedo atthis, with brilliant blue and orange plumage and a long pointed beak, which feeds on fish and other aquatic animals which it captures by diving. More fully common kingfisher.Various superstitions have been associated with the common kingfisher, some of which it shares with the halcyon (see halcyon n. 1a), with which it has often been identified. In particular, it was believed that a dried specimen hung up would by its position indicate the direction in which the wind was blowing.
