Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of king n. + bird n. In β. forms < king n. + bird n.In sense 1 probably after Dutch †koningsvogeltje (1626 as †conincx-vogeltie ; compare Dutch koningsvogel : 1697 or earlier), itself probably after Malay burung raja (although this is apparently attested later: 1869 or earlier), < burung bird + raja king ( < Sanskrit rājan : see raja n.1).
