Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: know-nothing n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < know-nothing n. + -ism suffix. Compare earlier know-nothingness n. and slightly later know-everythingism n. Compare also earlier donothingism n. at do-nothing n. and adj. Derivatives. N.E.D. (1901) indicates only a pronunciation with primary stress on the first syllable.
1. U.S. Originally: the political doctrine of the Know-Nothings (see know-nothing n. 2); support for the Know-Nothings or their policies (now historical). Later also in extended use: (depreciatively) extreme conservatism, isolationism, or bigotry, of a kind associated with the Know-Nothings.
