Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name King Alfred.
Etymology: < King Alfred (a849–99), the name of the King of the West Saxons and of the Anglo-Saxons, who reigned from a871–99 (see Alfredian adj.).King Alfred's cakes n. at sense 2 so named with allusion to the legend (attested since the 11th cent.) according to which King Alfred allowed cakes (in the original version, loaves) to burn while hiding from Danish pursuit during a time of near defeat.
1. A popular cultivated variety of daffodil having a large flower with a golden yellow trumpet and perianth segments; a plant or flower of this variety. Also King Alfred daffodil.

Also called cramp balls.Alluding to a resemblance to burnt cakes; see note in etymology.

1966 F. H. Brightman Oxf. Bk. Flowerless Plants 146/2 Daldinia concentrica (‘King Alfred's Cakes’, ‘Cramp Balls’) grows on dead trunks and large branches of ash, and very occasionally on other trees.
1978 Vasculum Oct. 51 This fungus is sometimes referred to as ‘King Alfred's cakes’, the black colour of the fruit body resembling charred cakes as in the legend.
