Etymology: Etymology uncertain. Compare early modern Dutch (Kilian) kijte, kiete (modern W. Flemish kijte, kiet), variant of Middle Dutch cuyte, kuite a fleshy part of the body, especially the thigh (Dutch kuit calf of the leg), = Middle Low German kût, fleshy part, entrails (Lübben). The suggestion of Jamieson, repeated by later dictionaries, that kyte represents Old English cwið, Old Norse kvið belly, is inadmissible.
