单词 knave-line
释义

knave-linen.

Brit. /ˈneɪvlʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈneɪvˌlaɪn/
Forms:

α. 1600s knaue-line, 1600s– knave-line.

β. 1600s knauling.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: knave n., line n.2
Etymology: < knave n. + line n.2 Compare later nave-line n. and the discussion at that entry. The semantic motivation is not entirely clear, but since the compound denotes an auxiliary construction in a vessel's rigging, knave may here be used in the sense ‘servant’ (compare knave n. 2). Perhaps compare Swedish dräng , denoting any small piece of cordage holding up a larger line (18th cent.; specific use of dräng servant: see dreng n.). With the β. forms compare the β. forms at line n.2 and also similar reduced forms in nautical language (e.g. bosun n. and the β. forms at rowlock n.1).
Nautical. Now historical and rare.
A line intended to prevent the vessel's halyards and ties moving around each other, apparently attached to a vessel's crosstrees and its side.In quot. 1740 apparently = nave-line n.
