Forms: α. Middle English ( kembelina), Middle English kymelyn, kemelyn, Middle English kymlyn(e, Middle English–1500s kemelin(e, Middle English–1600s kemeling, 1500s kymlen, kymling, gim-, 1600s kimline, kimlinge, kimblinge, kemelling, 1800s (dialect) kimlin(g, gimlin. β. Etymology: Middle English kem(b)elin , kim(e)lin , and kim(e)nel , of somewhat obscure formation, but apparently related to Old English cumb , Middle English combe , coomb n.1 2 there. The earlier form is that in -lin ; for that in -nel , compare cracknel from French craquelin (also surviving as cracklin(g) . More obscure is the Scots kimmon(d cumming n., which also has a parallel in cracon(d = cracknel. Mätzner compares medieval Latin cimiline, ciminile, but this denotes a basin for washing the hands in, and is regarded by Du Cange as an aphetized form of aqui- or aquamanile used in the same sense.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈkimnel.
Obsolete exc. dialect.
A tub used for brewing, kneading, salting meat, and other household purposes.
