单词 kilderkin
释义

kilderkinn.

Brit. /ˈkɪldəkɪn/, U.S. /ˈkɪldərkən/
Forms: α. Middle English kyner-, Middle English kynder-, quinder-, 1500s kynterkyn, 1500s–1600s kinderkin. β. Middle English–1500s kilderkyn, Middle English–1500s kylder-, (1500s kilde-), -kyn, -kin, (1500s -ken), 1500s– kilderkin.
Etymology: Of Dutch or Low German origin: compare Middle Dutch kinderkin , more commonly kindeken , kinneken (or -kijn ), also kyntken , -kijn , kimmekijn (see kempkin n., kinkin n.), the fourth part of a tun, etc. (compare Dutch kinnetje , a firkin): a diminutive form, referred to kintal , quintal , medieval Latin quintāle , German dialect kindel , kindle (13th cent. chindel ): see -kin suffix. (Compare Grimm s.v. Kindlein2, Verwijs & Verdam s.v. Kindekijn2.) The change of kin- to kil- is apparently peculiar to English, and is found already in 14th cent.
