Etymology: < Swahili -kikuyu, -gikuyu (in Wagikuyu, Wakikuyu, denoting the people and Kikikuyu, denoting the language) < Kikuyu -gĩkũyũ, self-designation (in Agĩkũyũ, denoting the people (singular Mũgĩkũyũ) and Gĩgĩkũyũ, denoting the language), reportedly after the name of a legendary leader.In Kikuyu orthography the letter g represents the voiced fricative /ɣ/.
