juxtaglomerular body
Situated next to a glomerulus of the kidney; juxtaglomerular apparatus, a structure variously considered to comprise (a) a juxtaglomerular body alone, (b) one of these bodies and a macula densa, or (c) (also juxtaglomerular complex) one of each of these, together with lacis cells and the afferent and efferent arterioles of a glomerulus; juxtaglomerular body, a mass of tissue scattered along the wall of the afferent arteriole of a glomerulus, composed of cells ( juxtaglomerular cells) with conspicuous cytoplasmic granules, believed to be the site of renin secretion.

1939 Proc. Soc. Exper. Biol. & Med. 42 227 The media of these vessels [sc. the interlobular and glomerular arteries] is composed not only of ordinary smooth muscle cells but also of larger, more afibrillar and probably less contractile cells. In the kidney these cells are found all along the arterial vascular tree and accumulate in groups at the vascular poles of the glomeruli to form the ‘juxta glomerular apparatus’ or ‘polkissen’.

1942 J. F. A. McManus in Lancet 3 Oct. 394/2 There are an increasing number of references..to a structure termed the ‘juxtaglomerular apparatus’. By this term we mean a group of apparently specialised structures in relation to, and including, the afferent and efferent arterioles of the glomerulus. The term ‘complex’ is used here in preference to Goormaghtigh's term ‘apparatus’, since he restricts the meaning to the vascular and perivascular arteriolar structures.

1968 E. L. Becker Struct. Basis Renal Dis. i. 34 The juxtaglomerular apparatus..is considered to consist of four portions: the specialized portion of the afferent arteriole containing characteristic granules; the first portion of the distal convoluted tubule, or macula densa; the cushion of cells at the vascular pole, continuous with the mesangium, termed the polkissen ‘lacis’ cells; and the efferent arteriole.
