Forms: Also 1500s kepp, 1700s keap, kaip, 1800s cape. Past tense Scottish1700s kept.
Etymology: Differentiated form of keep v. (compare s.v. senses 6, 7, 8), the short vowel of the past tense kept having been carried into the present and infinitive. In some Scots dialects, now cape/keːp/, with abnormal lengthening.
Scottish and northern dialect.
1. transitive. To meet, intercept, throw oneself in the way of (a person or thing); to stop the course of; to receive the force of (a blow); †to catch hold of.
