Etymology: < post-classical Latin ius in bello (also jus in bellum; 1602 or earlier) < classical Latin iūs law, right (see jure n.) + in (see in prep.) + bellō , ablative of bellum war (see duel n.). Compare jus ad bellum n.

The body of law regulating the conduct of parties (esp. states) in war, designed to reduce unnecessary damage and suffering.
