Forms: Middle English iuype, Middle English ioupe, Middle English iowpe, 1600s juipe, joope, 1800s joup, juip, jupe.
Etymology: < French jupe, in Old French also jube , gipe (see gipe n.) = Provençal jupa , Spanish aljuba and Portuguese aljuba (with Arabic article); also Old French juppe (see jup n.), jubbe (see jub n.1), gippe = Italian giuppa , giubba , < Arabic jubbah , jibbah jubbah n. Derivative forms are gipel n., gipon n., gippo n.1, and jupon n. For the treatment of the vowel in Middle English, compare the forms of duke, flute, and juice.
Now only Scottish and northern dialect (except as French).
