Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Asperger.
Etymology: < the name of Hans Asperger (1906–80), Austrian psychiatrist, who described the condition in 1944 ( Arch. Psychiatrie u. Nervenkrankheiten 117 76). Compare German Aspergersch, adjective (1968 designating individuals affected with this condition and the condition itself in a paper by Hans Asperger, 1970 or earlier in Aspergersches Syndrom).

(also Asperger syndrome) a condition now regarded as an autism spectrum disorder, characterized chiefly by difficulties with social interaction, repetitive patterns of behaviour, and preoccupation with restricted interests, without intellectual impairment or significant problems with verbal communication.As a separate diagnosis, the condition was removed from the 2013 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V). It is still retained in the 1992 International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization (ICD-10).
