Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu ḵas-ḵas, Persian ḵas-ḵas.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu ḵas-ḵas, and its etymon (ii) Persian ḵas-ḵas, reduplication of ḵas, in the same sense.An unreduplicated form is also occasionally attested in English; compare c'has in quot. 1798 and the following:1810 T. Williamson E. India Vade-mecum I. 485 The thatches are usually made of the kuss, or common wild grass, whose roots furnish that fibrous substance called kuss-kuss.1826 J. Leyden & W. Erskine tr. Mem. Zehir-Ed-Din 394 I sat..in an octagonal pavilion that was recently erected, and covered with khas-grass for coolness.1995 Weekend Times 11 Nov. 21/5 Even as peace was declared, the fragrance of khas, henna, and ghulab mingled with the drifting gunsmoke.
As a mass noun: the long fibrous roots of any of several aromatic grasses, esp. the vetiver Chrysopogon zizanioides, typically used for making fans, screens, mats, etc. Also: the grass itself. Also as a modifier in khus khus grass, khus khus root. Cf. vetiver n. 1.
