单词 jujube
释义

jujuben.

Brit. /ˈdʒuːdʒuːb/, U.S. /ˈdʒuˌdʒub/, /ˈdʒudʒəbi/
Forms: Also 1600s jejub, 1500s–1700s jubeb, 1600s–1700s jujub, 1700s jujeb. Also Middle English–1700s in Latin form jujuba.
Etymology: < French jujube, or medieval Latin jujuba (and Spanish jujuba) , a much altered form of Greek ζίζυϕον. In classical Latin, this was duly reproduced in Columella and Palladius by zizyphum (the fruit), zizyphus (the tree); these appear to have passed in late popular Latin and Romanic through zizipum, zizipus, zizupum, zizupus (compare Appendix Probi, ed. Heraeus, 1899, ‘zizipus non zizupus’), *zizubum, -us, to *zuzubo, zuzibo, whence (with the frequent change of z to j, and use of the neuter plural in -a in fruit-names as a feminine singular) Old Aretine dialect of Italian giuggebo (= jujebo) the tree, giuggeba the fruit, and medieval Latin jujuba, French jujube. The forms jujeb and jejub come nearer to Old Aretine giuggeba and vulgar Latin zizubum.
