Forms: 1800s– kanga, 1900s– khanga (rare).
Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili kanga.
Etymology: < Swahili kanga (plural kanga), perhaps originally a transferred use of kanga speckled guineafowl (which was historically in the same noun class, although it is not so now), taken to be so called with reference to a pattern resembling the markings of the bird.The English form khanga reflects the aspirated quality of the initial k- in Swahili.
East African.
A type of cotton fabric printed with designs in bright colours, typically in squares or rectangles featuring a border on all four sides, and used especially for women's clothing; a piece of this fabric, often worn as a shawl or wrap; = leso n.
