Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese jūdōgi.
Etymology: < Japanese jūdōgi (not dated in dictionaries of Japanese) < jūdō judo n. + -gi (late 10th cent.), combining form of ki clothing (late 9th cent.), nominalized stem of kiru to put on (clothes), to wear (see kimono n.). Compare Japanese keikogi uniform worn to practise various martial arts, including judo, lit. ‘practice clothes’ (1889 or earlier).
The uniform worn in judo, traditionally white, and comprising a heavy jacket, lightweight trousers, and a belt.
