Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably partly formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin iūdicātiōn- , iūdicātiō ; adjudication n.
Etymology: Probably partly (i) < classical Latin iūdicātiōn-, iūdicātiō action or power of deciding a case at law, action or faculty of appraising or criticizing < iūdicāt- , past participial stem of iūdicāre to judge (see judge v.) + -iō -ion suffix1, and partly (ii) shortened < adjudication n. Compare Anglo-Norman judicacion, Middle French, French (now rare) judication (end of the 13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman in specific sense ‘negative criticism’, 1458 in continental French), Spanish †judicación (15th cent.; rare), Italian giudicazione (13th cent.).
