Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: judge n., advocate n.
Etymology: < judge n. + advocate n.
Originally: a military legal official, responsible for advising a court martial on points of law and for summing up the case. Later also: any of various officials carrying out legal functions within one of the armed forces, or working within a division of certain armed forces dealing with judicial or legal matters (generally under the command of a Judge Advocate General: see sense Judge Advocate General n. at Compounds).
