Etymology: < German Khoisan the Khoekhoe and San people collectively, also a member of the Khoekhoe or San people ( L. Schultze Zur Kenntnis des Körpers der Hottentotten und Buschmänner (1928) 211, as Koïsan ), the language of the Khoisan (1975 or earlier) < Khoi- (in Khoi-khoin (1889 or earlier; < Khoekhoe khoe-khoen : see Khoekhoe n.)) + San (see San n.). Compare earlier Hottentot n. 1b, Hottentot adj.On the variation in the spelling of the initial consonant, compare discussion at Khoekhoe n.
