单词 khazi
释义

khazin.

Brit. /ˈkɑːzi/, U.S. /ˈkɑzi/
Forms: 1800s caser, 1800s casey, 1800s– carser, 1800s– carsey, 1900s– cahsy, 1900s– carsi, 1900s– carsy, 1900s– cawsy, 1900s– karsey, 1900s– karzey, 1900s– karzi, 1900s– karzie, 1900s– karzy, 1900s– kazis (plural), 1900s– kharzi, 1900s– khazi.
Origin: A borrowing from Italian, combined with an English element. Etymons: Italian casa , -y suffix6.
Etymology: < Italian casa house (see case n.2) + -y suffix6, probably originally in Polari slang (compare context in quot. 1846 at sense 1). Compare casa n.2With the form carser perhaps compare -er suffix6. Spellings with kh are not attested before the early 1970s (although they now predominate), and may result from association with the title of the character the Khasi of Khalabar in the 1968 film Carry On Up the Khyber, in which Khasi puns fancifully (and offensively) on this word (in sense 2a) and (probably) cadi n. (see forms at that entry; perhaps compare also the name of the Khasi people of north-eastern India and Bangladesh: see Khasi n.).
slang (chiefly British).
1. A house. Occasionally: spec. (a) a brothel; (b) a public house. Now rare.
