Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Southern Sotho. Partly a borrowing from Northern Sotho. Partly a borrowing from Tswana. Etymons: Southern Sotho kgotla; Northern Sotho kgotla; Tswana kgotla.
Etymology: Either < Southern Sotho kgotla and its cognates Northern Sotho kgotla and Tswana kgotla, locative of -kgotla courtyard, place of assembly, council chamber or enclosure, assembly of the people (singular lekgotla , plural makgotla ) or < Northern Sotho kgotla and its cognate Tswana kgotla, variant singular of -kgotla (in different noun class, with zero-prefix). Compare later lekgotla n. and makgotla n.The form khotla reflects the preferred spelling of the Southern Sotho word in Lesotho.
In southern Africa (in Sotho and Tswana society).
