Etymology: < the name of Heinrich Albert Johne (1839–1910), German veterinary surgeon, who (with L. Frothingham) described the disease and its causative bacterium in 1895 (Deutsche Zeitschr. f. Thiermedicin 21 438).

1. Johne's disease n. a disease affecting mainly cattle, sheep, and other ruminants, caused by a mycobacterium and characterized by granulomatous inflammation of the intestines and intestinal lymphoid tissue, resulting in diarrhoea, weight loss, and weakness. Also called paratuberculosis.
